(Panama City, Fla.) - In the midst of a national economic crisis, public transportation seems to be one of few mainstays with the residents of Bay County. For the past three months Bay Town Trolley has reported record-breaking ridership figures and September proved to be no different. Last month’s 43,338 rides brings year-to-date ridership to 335,834, a 14 percent increase from the same period in 2007.
Even though summer is officially over, ridership on the trolley has remained steady. With just three months left in the year, Bay Town Trolley is only 35,174 rides short of exceeding 2007 year-end ridership totals.
“Based on last year’s trends and current ridership totals we’re expecting to surpass last year’s ridership within the next few weeks,” said Beth Coulliette, Bay Town Trolley’s executive director. “We have lots of momentum right now that should result in strong ridership numbers throughout the remainder of the year.”
These are not only exciting times for trolley officials, but riders are also pleased with the trolley’s accomplishments. Those hopping aboard can take advantage of new transportation shelters throughout the county and newer trolleys that have recently been added to the fleet. In an effort to continue providing expanded service for area riders, trolley officials are also gearing up to launch their new route, the Career Connector later this month.
“These improvements are testaments that we listen to and understand the concerns of our riders,” said Lee Bragg, Bay Town Trolley’s general manager. “Nothing makes us happier than when we’re able to actually implement new services and additions that enhance the rider experience. “
For the past 12 years Bay Town Trolley has provided public transportation services to Bay County with the mission of moving riders of Bay County with clean, safe, efficient and dependable transportation while enhancing the quality of life and meeting the growing needs of the community. The system operates Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. The Pier Park Express, Bay Town Trolley’s weekend beach route runs Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. – midnight.
